OUR GROUP CHALLENGES
Freedom
April 2017
"Freedom" was the challenge given to us by Terry. He starts off below.
Freedom for Terry meant Freedom from the Corporate world where jacket and tie were reqired. This piece is made of all his old silk ties.
Silk warp too. A sort of liberating pleasure was had cutting the ties into strips for the weft.
Freedom of the Press inspired Barbara. The weft in this bag is "plarn" made from the plastic wrappers that hold copies of The Times.
Practical too. Wet proof for the paper and anything carried in the bag. Clever!
Darby completed a commission and so found Freedom in that. Oh the lucky commissioner.
The colors are wonderful. And the workmanship is splendid. Congratulations to the commissioner AND to Darby.
Ronnie found Freedom the the "red, white and blue" of the national flag. Really works here.
She says she has had the varigated yarn for years. Lesson is never get rid of something because you don't currently like it. It will work someday.
The freedom of an open meadow with flowers inspired Leila.
And wouldn't it be great to run through that beautiful meadow? That would be total freedom.
Images of the Statue of Liberty and immigrants seeing it for the first time make up this powerful image from Claudia.
She even incorporated the title and lines from "The New Colossus" the poem by Emma Lazerus that is on a plaque at the base of the statue.

Carie wove these beautiful linen towels using FREEDOM as a color key.
F - Forest Green, R - Rust, E - Eggshell, E - Ebony, D - Denim, O - Ochre and M - Marigold. And they all play so well together.
